fun fact about character design: saturation and color is what kinda plays a part in a character's personality. A nice friendly character has a brighter more vibrant color scheme, while negative characters are more muted or dark. This also goes for scenes that portray emotion

Relatable human traits. Basically anything outside of a cliche/stereotypical personality. Something as simple as knowing a character's favorite food can make them endearing enough.

It's a thing if your character's too close to the original inspiration, I kind of had it coming since I often times would draw the character in Lapis's dress and I'd do very close screenshot redraws with them. Here's a few examples of the original design.
