Characters are an extension of the writer, perceived by the reader. You never know who's gonna be the favorite, or even your own favorite, and that's an aspect that makes writing them fun! Just a fun anecdote to cap things off.

Relatable human traits. Basically anything outside of a cliche/stereotypical personality. Something as simple as knowing a character's favorite food can make them endearing enough.
