Ian would most likely be a crafter, especially of quality tech, tools'n gadgets. Good with his hands, sharp eyes of a bird. Not a fan of combat, so he'd be the ranged type using rifles or snipers if it comes to it. (As much as Rimworld allows 'sharp eyed' snipers. :B)
