@y2k_aesthetic Another fixation of y2k 3DCG was the "cyberbabe" or "virtual idol" - now that CG had approached the realm of human facsimile, artists were eager to create virtual models, pop stars, and more.
They were, of course, perfectly idealized, dreams that only a computer could create.
@y2k_aesthetic Another popular approach was the use of spheres and prims, often untextured, to create figures and organic objects. This look evoked plastic or vinyl, and evoked bright and poppy energy along the lines of the more "bubblegum" side of y2k.
@y2k_aesthetic Much y2k 3DCG focused on abstraction - spheres, metaballs, simple shapes with focus on material - in a way that incorporated y2k colors and shapes. Water was a popular focus - fluid, cool, and blue - and evoked ideas of the "digital sea" of cyberspace.

@y2k_aesthetic Of course, Japan had its own distinct variant of y2k design, influenced by prominent Japanese creators.
One such creator was Takashi Murakami, one of the pioneers of "superflat" - a style known for vivid color, flat shading, and chaotic, organic forms.
@y2k_aesthetic y2k-era rave flyers (esp in Europe) also incorporated Japan-inspired imagery.
A popular trope was the use of kana/kanji purely as a design detail, for "exotic" or "cool" factor - while historically important to y2k, this has raised some ethical debate in modern discourse.
@y2k_aesthetic The Designers Republic was one of the first Western y2k tastemakers to incorporate Japanese design into their work - their famous 1994 Emgire #29 cover featured "Sissy", a mascot character inspired by retro anime. She would go onto appear in their work throughout the next decade
@y2k_aesthetic Much of western y2k's fascination with Japan came from its reputation as a hi-tech nation - a perfect match for a design aesthetic with tech as its forefront.
The western "anime boom" of the late 90's was also well underway - its "cool factor" influenced y2k-era design and ads.
