They are pretty much the same thing but affect different set of layers.
Clipping layers will only be visible where the layer they are "clipped" to exists.
In this case my color layers are clipped to my block one. If I release them, you can see what the layers really have.

Here is my new abstract oil painting!
With palette knife and brushes, I started to create the layers. I also poured different paints on canvas to create a horizontal lines. After one layer of paint, I left the painting to dry and came back to it later with another layer.

Basically I put gradient map on while I draw so it is all actually in grayscale except for the red and peach color layers. Last pic shows gradient map. Darkest value is black and lightest is white and then in between is indigo, blue, pale green, pink
