I believe how you draw faces is preventing you from drawing it properly. Sanae's face, while very adorable, resembles a child's face. I recommend to decrease the size of the eyes and to make the nose & jaw somewhat more noticeable, like I did in the attached image.

This b/w image was achieved by having a black filled layer (white or gray works too!) set to [Color] on top of the original image. Here the values make more sense as the leaves aren't as distinct and the b/w image feels as bright as the colored one.
