Steps 1 and 2: sketch and block-in. I am a very, very messy sketcher, and my typical sketches for clients takes 2 passes to preserve their sanity. Here's my messy early steps in full glory. I wanted the painting to be dark, thus started value block-in from a dark grey.

clients when no work has been done but for me, hours of work is done from the get-go. Often enough if a client needs the non refundable 30% a compermise is worked out where they pay me for the artwork provided and I’ll give them the remainder on top of the refund. Art examples V
