Made some progress on this figure yesterday. I'd normally be working up the background more, but since I still have some drawing issues, and the model can't get in and out of pose without demolishing the drapery, I think I'm gonna order things a bit differently than normal.
Example: John Singer Sargent (god among men) spent a lot of time on faces, while only sketching drapery. He knew where the focal points of his pieces were, and spent most of his time there.

The three Graces, holding a blank medallion and a drapery; frontispiece to de Vias’s ‘Charitum libri tres’ (Paris: Edmond Martin, 1660); before portrait in medallion, and before letter, 1659, engraving
Sargent was one of the finest watercolourists & he used that genius to depict flesh & mood in a manner that has rarely been surpassed. Man with Red Drapery (c1904), Study of a Male Nude Figure (1904) & Studies of a Male Nude Reclining (c1904)
#StudioArt3 has been working to complete their "drapery" assignment during #remotelearning. Each piece is student designed - selecting their own materials and artistic inspiration for their piece. I'm loving the variety and voice in these works! @HVArtsEd #hvartsed #k12artchat

//warnin' for nips but i don't play the 'it's okay for guys but not for gals' game so
Life is short, I'm posting these on main. What started out as a joke, ended up a series of commissions....y'all draw your d&d groups in drapery pin-up poses do it
folds & drapery studies for a discord challenge - i actually ended up having a lot of fun painting these ✌️
Actually pretty happy with this little still life practice I did. I'm determined to start painting again in earnest this year. Drapery is a challenge and a half but this was oddly relaxing

Every time I write off John Singer Sargent for being all about superficial drapery and sleeping with his subjects, I come across a painting of his like this...THE MOSQUITO NETS (1908) at @diadetroit has wispy visible brushstrokes making the image seem very spontaneous.
It is wonderful to see what has been digitised by our collection team, I think #PreRaphaelite fans will enjoy this one! It is the drapery study for Desdemona's Death Song (the Willow Song) by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, dating from c.1879-81.

2/2 Deposition, for the cathedral in Perugia. Involved, understandably, a lot of grief. Plus rather floating Jesus and billowing drapery. By Federico Barocci, whose day is today.
