Drawing underrated prehistoric animals 5/?: Dicynodon, a therapsid from the Upper Permian period. They are rather well-known, but I love these potato creatures so much I don't think they receive enough love.
Say hello to FRE☆KY Doge Studios' offical mascot, Sobëk~! She is a Late Permian proto mammal, Inostrancevia Gorgonopsia dubbed with the coolest nick name of Wolf of the Permian
Icon by this cool dude @Bish0nenPrince
Drawing underrated prehistoric animals 3/?: Cotylorhynchus, a big synapsid from the Permian era. It’s a very round friend with a tiny little head, and I don’t think this drawing does the teeny tiny head justice…
For #FossilFriday I am opening a thread about Early Triassic tetrapod faunal assemblages. After the Permian extinction, terrestrial faunal assemblages were depauperate and most were very similar in composition. Temnospondyls were quick to diversify #paleoart #sciart #scicomm
Inostrancevia, probably the most commonly depicted Permian gorgonopsid. I did this fairly quickly, mostly just to experiment with integument. The loose, almost sketchy rendering is supposed to be kind of tough, kind of wrinkly skin with some hairs/bristles #paleoart
Chroniosuchus is an extinct reptiliomorph from the upper Permian of Russia. It reached 1.5 metres long.

Only three groups of Synapsids/therapsids survived the end-Permian mass extinction event into the Early Triassic: dicynodonts (top), therocephalians (center), and cynodonts (bottom). Only the latter (our relatives) survived into the Jurassic. #paleoart #sciart #therapsids
Prince of the underworld
Partially inspired with Mussorgsky's Gnome and numerous legends from tundra about Chude people, a tribe that went underground. In some rare Komi-Permian variants Chudes were said to have pitch-black skin or even fur.

Finished Cotylorhynchus!!! Gave this Early Permian synapsid some cornified pads on the skin to help it dig/burrow, which is what it likely did with those action figure forelimbs it's got. #paleoart #paleontology #sciart #scientificillustration

On this, the eve of St. Patrick's Day, I only want to remind you that our distant relatives, Dimetrodon and Sphenacodon (Permian synapsids) had appropriately-shaped tooth roots in cross-section...
Should have the colour balance issue fixed by next week. #FossilFriday
Here is our new paper!
This little ancient (289-mil yo) reptile was a SURVIVOR, it would drop its tail to escape predators! Modern Reptiles also do this, but hipster Permian reptiles did it first!

A section through the snout of arguably the cutest little animal to ever go extinct, Diictodon! These tusked, beaked, pug-sized critters from the Permian period belonged to the Synapsida (the group that also includes mammals). #FossilFriday
For #fossilfriday: Amazing specimen of two Seymouria (Permian amphibians) from the Bromacker quarry in Germany. I recently had the opportunity to visit the collections where these guys were stored, and they are just one example of many cool fossils that were found at the quarry.
Today’s morning warmup sketch: Diplocaulus, the famous Nectridean genus, one of my favorite Permian Tetrapods! Sketch done as suggested by @Blackmudpuppy #paleoart #sciart #diplocaulus
Got commissioned to do a PR for Texas Permian Basin! RTs/Feedback is appreciated!
