1880年8月28日、東京の楽器職人・松永定次郎が最初の国産バイオリンを完成させたことに由来。西洋では16世紀頃にバイオリンが創られ以後クラッシック音楽で重要な役割を果たしてきたが、明治時代の日本では流行歌の伴奏に使われることが多かった。
