the plane is coloured based on the height, using a gradient but rounding the values so each square is the same solid colour

I basically paint the black separately as its own layer with another layer for lit areas underneath. Its deceptively simple but I think yields an interesting result and really helps control values. Last step is to do a little paint over with the mixer brush to bring it together.
