LINDISFARNE CASTLE. First executed 2000 and re-worked today. Lying off the Northumberland coast Holy Island was the first place in Europe to experience the Vikings when they sacked the monastery in 796 AD. The Castle was built in Tudor times to deter incursions by the Scots.

In Northumberland folklore, a fairy couple hired a doctor to deliver their baby. But the father struck the doctor blind when he realised the doctor had spotted him stealing from the stalls at a local market!

At a time when oil painting was the norm, Girtin helped to establish watercolour as a reputable and desirable medium.
