The herald of the gods. He was the god of travel, roads, thieves, speed, trickery, boundaries and shepherds.
He also guide the soul to the underworld.
He was the son of Zeus and Maia, the daughter of the Titan Atlas.

His roman counterpart is Mercury.

Shepherds part of nativity in all Christianity. Orthodox follows idea of Christ being born in cave near Bethlehem, as do some Catholics .

The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem it has grotto.

Sheep were also kept in caves in the area.
