Just wanted to show how I would approach dark skin in a pastel desaturated style. Using limited values is great! It’s all about how they interact within the piece. The skin should be closer to the black hair value than to the background which will make the skin appear darker.

Literally it's that easy to not whitewash/make a character look like a grayish c*rpse. Left is the person's OG piece and the right is an edit I made by just sliding hue/sat values.

I did a little something because it's difficult to explain, but that's what I see when I look at the world, and it makes painting difficult sometimes, bright values and strong contrast always fuck me up

The thing I'd recommend you focus on the most for now is your values and form rendering - the way you use light and shadow to define shapes. Focus on using light to define *forms* instead of edges, and resist the urge to define every edge.
