John Brown, the Kansas abolitionist who seized the @HarpersFerryNPS Arsenal a month earlier, was convicted #OTD in 1859 of murder, treason, and conspiring with slaves to rebel. He was hanged a month later, ending what is known as the Tragic Prelude to the #CivilWar.
Pro-slavery #Democrat #PrestonBrooks from #SouthCarolina used his cane to beat anti-slavery #Republican #CharlesSumner from #Boston Mass in #USSenate on May 22, 1858. Senate records (https://t.co/4HG1JHOneu) say it was "breakdown of reasoned discourse"—#USCivilWar 3 years later.
During the #CivilWar, Forrest fought against the United States, commanding confederate cavalry in the western theater. He was responsible for the infamous Fort Pillow massacre, in which his men murdered hundreds of unarmed, surrendering black soldiers of the @USArmy.
Within the next two months, Brown was tried, found guilty of treason and murder, and hanged. His raid and planned rebellion was viewed by Southerners as a prelude to more aggressive actions to end slavery, contributing to the push for secession and, ultimately, the #CivilWar.

The confederate Army of Tennessee under Braxton Bragg occupied the hills around @Chattanooga_gov, TN #OTD in 1863. They had chased General William Rosecrans’ Union Army of the Cumberland northward after defeating them at the Battle of @ChickamaugaNPS. #CivilWar
Sheridan moved quickly, striking Early with two Corps totaling about 40,000 men. Early was outnumbered nearly 4-to-1, and though the fighting was fierce, he ultimately had to withdraw. Winchester, which changed hands 75 times during the #CivilWar, never left U.S. control again.
