A wonderful insight provided by the Raphael Exhibition Manet used figures from Raphael’s engraving of The Judgement of Paris (1515) in his famous work Le Dejeuner sur l’herbe from 1863 because the French Salon held Raphael in high esteem.

At Lempertz today: The Holy Trinity by Maarten van Heemskerck. As if there can be any doubt about authorship, there is an engraving by Jacob Matham (1602) which mentions “M. Heemskerck pinxit”. 1/2
