in the last panel, the character falls so the panel extends further down the page than usual. the reader is used the panels fitting within a certain frame on the page, so this gives the same effect of "oh shit there's space below me" (this is clearer in the print version).

comics are a visual medium so here are some examples from https://t.co/YPsgzqIoOl. in the last panel the character stops dead, surprised by what he sees. having the plants burst out of the panel give the same effect to the reader since the rest of the page is so uniform.
