Comparing the side views, there has been some proportion adjustments. BIS Bowser is rounder around the mouth, and generally speaking has more solid shapes. PiS Bowser is a little slimmer.

I don't have a step by step tutorial to show you, but what I do is

separate the wood with lines, all with different shapes. Make some parts darker as if they had holes

then add some highlights to make it stand out

I like to visit botanical gardens where I easily get inspired looking at various plants and their forms.
Painting these scenes always gives me freedom to experiment with colors and shapes.

Thinking about it Shin-hanga style would've looked astounding in palaeoart landscapes. Might experiment with colours / brush strokes to get similar effect in future 🤔
