4. The witch used Rapunzel's hair to trick the Prince into climbing into the tower. She cursed that he'd never see R again, and threw him from the tower. As he fell, he got blinded by viscious thorns, and staggered, bereft, into the unknown

4. Rapunzel let down her hair, and Prince climbed up. They planned her escape; she'd weave a ladder from skeins of silk he'd bring.
Alas witch found out, cut off her hair + kept it, turfing R out into the middle of nowhere.

The tale of Snow-White and Rose-Red comes from The Brothers Grimm. Not to be confused with Snow-White, this story is about two sisters, an angry thieving dwarf, and a kings son banished as a wild bear. Illustration by Jessie Willcox Smith https://t.co/2qgm4TQLmb

Snow White and Rose Red is a fairy tale which uses the motif of doubling - the two individuals who express opposite but complimentary traits. In a way, the two are the opposed sides of one individual, as fairy tales characters do not allow for ambiguity.

Ever hear the tale of Whitebear Whittington? An Appalachian shapeshifting tale, a complex, magical blend of Beauty & the Beast and the Eros/Psyche myth. A young girl is promised by her father to a young man under a spell - a man by night, but a bear by day.

Here's a bonus Grimms' fairy tale that I drew last year, since it features pancakes (and a wolf and a fox conspiring to steal them). Happy pancake day - I hope the wolves keep away from your pancakes.

In the Italian Catskin variant, The She-Bear, an old woman provides the heroine, Preziosa, with a wooden stick that, when placed in her mouth, transforms her into a bear. She uses it to escape marriage to her father.

Cursed by an evil fairy & transformed into a 'beast', only true love could restore the prince to his former self. 'Beauty and the Beast' may have been written specifically to prepare young girls in 18th century France for arranged marriages. 💍
