Pentamerone or The Tale Of Tales by Giambattista Basile has a frame story of a false bride & 10 female storytellers that are hired to tell a story each over 5 nights (50 in total). The true bride (who has been disguised as a storyteller) is revealed at the end.

In the Italian Catskin variant, The She-Bear, an old woman provides the heroine, Preziosa, with a wooden stick that, when placed in her mouth, transforms her into a bear. She uses it to escape marriage to her father.

In 1911 Stories From the Pentamerone was published, containing 32 color plates. Stories From the Pentamerone was a beautiful example of Warwick Goble’s Japanese techniques and was one of many which would come to solidify his reputation as a master illustrator.
