Whenever I start adding traits to a character that contradict their current concept, I either end up changing them, or instead decide to just make a new one.
Here's an example of the latter: Jane, Alice's and Tiffany's mom, because I had too many Alice ideas that didn't suit her.

This is totally an idea from some of the comments, I swear I never had the thought myself.

A friend recently recommended me Sabella by Tanith Lee. It’s a great book, it’s about a vampire woman on mars but never gets as hokey as that premise implies. It’s a book that makes you feel like you’re rotting until the very end. Highly recommend it!
