Thaumatichthys for a fashionably late This thing is just the best- it feeds on sea cucumbers and rotting seaweed and floats around pointing vertically, pointing straight down towards the seafloor. It's my favorite deep-sea fish, and I just love how weird it is!

Matilda took more time on this than any other
This isn’t the first time that she’s traced an image for the outline, but this is the most careful that she has been.

Deep sea anglerfish, like Bufoceratias wedli, are known for their lures (called esca). The ends of these lures are filled with bioluminescent bacteria that glow in the darkness of the deep sea, attracting prey to within striking range of its razor-sharp teeth

Australia's salamanderfish (Lepidogalaxias salamandroides) is an odd one - this cylindrical-bodied fish can 'stand' on its pelvic/pectoral fins and also bend its neck to the side at a right angle, compensating for eyes that can't move independently

Whoops! I misread this week's as fish ONLY from Cypriniformes, Perciformes, or Cichliformes...

Here's some more aquarium fish:
🐟 Tetras are Characiformes
🐟 Corydoras catfish are Siluriformes
🐟 Livebearers are Cyprinodontiformes
🐟 Gourami are Anabantiformes https://t.co/zawHFW2IO4

In 2020, all of the 17 fish species endemic to Lake Lanao in the Philippines were officially considered Extinct or Possibly Extinct, including Barbodes lindog AKA Lindog. The loss of the native fish community was caused in part by introduced fish species

Virtual trip to Lake Lanao in the Philippines. Apparently lots of cyprinid diversity lost to overfishing and introduced species. Here are 2 that were declared extinct by IUCN in 2020.
