West Africa also has a pantheon of deities known as Orisha. The deity Yamaya is known as the mother of the ocean. She is often depicted as a mermaid and her shrines can be decorated with figures of mermaids.

Paper flowers such as these were stuck to murals etc in shrines by devotees. These are from Dunhuang and Khotan and probably date from 9th or 10th century. Search for 'flower' on https://t.co/oiasR2QD0I for many examples
