I found out that melanite is type of garnet so I just took tweaked her original design to fit the garnet gem type.

Actually the only layer mask in question is this one here, which I’m using to soften the transition between the blue of her tail and her skin tone. Originally I had the idea to let the blue run up her back but I thought it looked a bit harsh so airbrushing in a mask tones it down

This is cool because it's a demonstration of how you can design an iconic anime character to be black - black characters are abysmally underrepresented in anime. When they are, they're either caricatures or don't really look black aside from the skin tone.
