My story I’m working on actually stars and consists of a lot of shapeshifters! They’re imperfect, so it takes a lot of energy to completely change but they can copy the biology of another species to a tee! They have other abilities too utilizing their shifting.

I haven't named this mermaid yet, but she and her people are pretty much shapeshifters. The only time they absolutely have to be in their natural form is when they're entirely submerged in water. So that's how they're able to go on land if they wish.
