Miscellaneous art used to promote Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games depicts Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog drawn by prominent 2D artists of both respective franchises, being Super Mario's Shigehise Nakaue and Sonic's Yuji Uekawa.

The answer used to be "just let Uekawa do it all" but
a) honestly most of the promotional stuff for Sonic nowadays *is* 2D instead of these renders
b)I feel like Uekawa's *also* stagnated in certain ways; for one thing I really wish he'd let go of "The Hand Thing"
Finally finished this drawing of Sona; inspired by Yuji Uekawa's Sonic Adventure art
Happy birthday to @SonicStarGenie! Really grateful to have this person supporting me so I thought I’d gift them this art piece of their oc! Now I ain’t the best at drawing humanoid characters, but I tried my best at replicating the Uekawa style!
Have a great day, dude!! :D
@YinShon Also how can you tell this is gates' work? Imo his stuff looks a lot flatter compared to to uekawas work and it looks pretty different than those examples you posted
@YinShon This one is for sure Uekawa because it's from Sonic channel and all the Sonic channel character portraits are by him
