I haven't made maps like this with feathers in mind, but for some reason have been making them pretty feathery lately. The style I've played with has evolved over several years, originally being more like rivers, I think.

if you have a pretty decent eye for color already but struggle to actually pick harmonious colors, or if you feel that your shading looks too bland, gradient maps are a cheat code/shortcut to correcting your colors. here's some tricks i like to use with gradient maps :)
