You could try doing a process based on building up like a watercolor painter. Mateusz Urbanowzicz usually paints traditionally with watercolor and procreate and I have no doubt that you could probably get some insight as to how he colors his backgrounds on his YouTube videos.

I did end up finishing this thing! I may make it a bit darker in post.
Keeping things symmetrical when painting traditionally is a hassle, even with a perfectly even digital sketch.
Next step: back cover, and typesetting. I hope I can escape the torment of handlettering.
