In my early paintings, I meticulously painted every part of the image. All my edges were sharp and clean, and even minute objects in the background were highly detailed. This was extremely time consuming, all ultimately didn't give my paintings the look and feel I was seeking.

I just draw the hair form.

Then basic color,
Then dark shade
Then darker
Then darkest
Then light
Then lighter
Then lightest.

For each one, I smudge and blur the edges so it’ll blend together.

Brushes used, nothing fancy or texture heavy, colors + shapes + smudge to blend edges do most of the work. For smaller shapes I sometimes let the shapes randomize and scatter a bit, which you can see in the final image in the less polished darker areas.

The height-lines allow height estimation by counting, since they are evenly spaced vertically. They are wonky on super steep edges for a number of reasons but I think for the purposes of a game map it's OK since its still a clear demarcation between sections of the map.
