I would say what you've made looks great so far. What has helped me is using more saturated tones and really getting into dynamic lighting. Saturated colors work really well for shading and you can even play around with all colors! I personally use deep red tones.

Since I did changed the shading I feel my drawings has improved a lot!
In the past I was using a grey tone(1) for shading, but since I did changed to a dark blue(2) or dark violet(3) the quality it's much better!

I always think in big and simple shape. You can always add detail later by giving it a soft shade, blur some part of the hard shade, adding another color, etc

Learning about shape and light source is fundamental for shading!
