Even Sonic 1 had a story. They had a plan that included cutscenes in the game which were scrapped only due to constraints. So for the original games, they told some of the story in the next best place they could: the instruction manuals.

When finishing Windy Valley in Gamma's story, after the cutscene with Angel Island opening up, rather than spawning outside of Windy Valley as you should, the Japanese version (left) spawns you outside of the train station. This was fixed in future versions of the game (right).

Not technically a VN, but the cutscenes all use a VN style anyway and the same artist did the art for the Date A Live VNs, so I'm gonna say Neptunia. The character designs are great and there's something distinctive about Tsunako's art style that draws me in more than other art.

GBFVS rpg mode was a gbf normal story telling and system with fighting gameplay instead of turn based ones, it was enjoyable nonetheless also seeing all the characters in the cutscenes and story was a joy
