Illustrations of tomten and Julbocken by Swedish illustrator John Bauer. Tomten are mischievous creatures who bring gifts at Christmas if you leave out some Christmas porridge for them. The gifts are carried by the Yule goat.

In celebration of the upcoming winter solstice here is The Yule Goat by John Bauer. In later Scandinavian traditions the yule goat became a giver of presents. Does anyone know if this still happens?

#Yule in Shetland is filled with #festivals, as well as trows (#trolls) who wander about, entering mortal homes. The Rev. Kirk was worried about this, telling his congregation that Candlemas day could result in what he called '#Fairy Danger.'

Always liked this illustration by John Bauer for the story “Agneta and the Sea King”. The fact that one never gets a good look at the Sea King’s face always made that character seem kind of ominous. #FairyTaleTuesday
John Bauer, illustration for "The Boy and the Trolls", 1915.
John Bauer is considered the national illustrator of Sweden – this is his piece for "The Queen's Pearl Necklace", 1914. Part of that "golden age" of illustration that World War I stabbed in the back… #johnbauer #fantasy #illustration #sweden
@terriwindling How absolutely gorgeous. And one of my favorites...John Bauer!
So, as I've been drawing tonight (and staying up way later than I should be) I've come to the conclusion that a lot of my art has been influenced by Arakawa Hiromu, John Bauer, and Alan Lee. These three have been a part of my life for so long now.
He was a man who could bring order to any chaos. But one slippery Austrian proved too elusive even for him. This time, it was personal. 24 Hours of Bauer.
