The first piece I focused on trying to render it as best I could with more subtle shadows/highlights. Combine that with better anatomy, clear silhouette and expression just all came together nicely.

There's something about Classic Sonic concept art that I really like for some reason. Maybe it's the simplicity of it or the marker colorling where you can see hints of faint highlights.

Step 3: lock alpha turn your sequin layer from Normal blending to Hard Light to plan shadows vs highlights. I used light yellow and dark teal to start, then in the light areas added paths of pink and light teal to make variety. Use a watercolor brush for smooth transitions!

The BG turned blue because I was so desperate to get the colors to be more vivid that I turned down highlights. But I also deliberately go for weirder effects sometimes.

Hue shifting is when you adjust the hue value of a certain color for shadows and highlights. Here's two examples of shading a blue ball. Notice how on the right example, the shadow is closer to purple, and the highlight is closer to teal, making it more visually interesting.
