I think I'm getting more generic and people with a sienna underpainting, with a violet wash for the shadows, and green(from like a jade color to an olive color) wash in the bright areas with some ultramarine in the darker shadows.

Detailing and layering.

It's interesting to start with a vibrant underpainting that is half purple, half orange, and know that the end result will be much more neutral and brown and gray toned.

In case anyone is curious about the progress. I had a completely different palette at first but I didn't save a real capture of it, so have the OG underpaints for the character. My painting style is so obtuse.

Feel like they hit the right balance with Mystery Inc- more saturated but with darker underpainting and grittier textures, kind of a early days haunted mansion thing goin on, 60's looking as all hell too
