Something ive been doing is adding a gradient on the base of where i want the shading to go
for example, here i put the gradient in the areas that are shadowed and added extra details from there

Jojo does this thing where it has these lil scratch marks above noses, I like to use something like that to show areas that project and recede, you can see it on nose bases (and sometimes I use them for texture in general)
