Thing that also keeps D&D from being as Mainstream is probably the fact that J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S.Lewis has inspired tons of Sword and Sorcery stories in the same vein as D&D.
Gobelin Slayer the anime is like a D&D campaign.

Before that is centuries of fantasy lore.

Tulkas, who among the Valar welcomed conflict with Melkor, sought to persuade Fëanor to surrender the Silmarils.

Wisely he saw that Melkor's corruption of Fëanor came from a desire to possess the last remaining light of the Two Trees.

On this day in 1980: Unfinished Tales was published. Collected by son, Christopher, they are a varied collection of Tolkien's writings from the First to the Third Age. They include the Númenórean love story of "Aldarion and Erendis: The Mariner's Wife".

The Dwarves tell no tale; but even as mithril was the foundation of their wealth, so also it was their destruction: they delved too greedily and too deep, and disturbed that from which they fled, Durin's Bane.

Sauron & werewolves. Earlier this year I gave an interview to a Tolkien centered Russian web magazine, and this was a picture I did for the occasion.
