A diverse group made up of veterans and fresh conscripts from the Ostfront and Germany, the 352nd Infantry Division fiercely defended Omaha Beach as US 1st and 29th Divisions attacked. The ID was forced to retreat to St. Lo. It was shattered by July.

Pointe du Hoc sat between Utah and Omaha beaches, capable of pounding either with artillery, raining havoc on the Americans. U.S. Rangers were sent to neutralize the battery, and though they succeeded, more than half of were killed or wounded.
