John Hampden, Civil War-era Parliamentary leader famous for his opposition to Charles I over ship money, died #OnThisDay 1643 from wounds sustained in a skirmish with Royalists. In the early 19th c., British radicals named their debating societies ‘Hampden Clubs’ in his honour.
