Experiment with various edges to create contrast and direct the composition. Pens or a fine brush with wet ink will create a crisp line. A more frayed/dry brush will create softer lines. This can be used to create depth of field effects or lessen the impact of lines. 8/?

While this is going out there, I figure I should make one addendum. They fade the mesh out at the edges with vertex colors and squeeze the texture coordinates a bit so that the cutoff is less sharp. So the curly mesh actually looks more like this:

I painted the Zerua! Doing a kind of exmaple too of show off of how it looks like when I start with a cell shaded pic, go over the shading edges with a water color brush, and finally add a light glow layer to make things pop.
