the conceit was cool and i'm glad it worked: i essentially treated them to a linear, trap-filled dungeon with an average encounter at the very end. then one round into the battle, a Weird Guy Appears and chases them back out. the Weird Guy was very strong >:)

I can say full heartedly, without even finishing the game, that Luca Blight from Suikoden 2 is one of the best JRPG villains I've encountered.
Hell, just a video game antagonist in general.
He lived up to the hype.

Do what I do and play Suikoden 2 right now.

My level 5 small tabaxi (palico) barbarian 1v1 a dungeon guard. 1 hp left they went to non-lethal hit and missed me on the roll. Retaliated back to win and end the encounter, but needless to say my cat lives up to her name now: Schrödinger.
