Ral was originally described to me as a thrillseeker and a daredevil. It was an interesting challenge to design him within the confines of the Izzet’s bright color schemes and wacky inventions. I wanted sometime a little darker and sinister for him.

Eg take tasmanian devil. Exaggerate his features, and add another features that are not found in the said animals like colors, sentience etc. And voila! you got yourself a catoon character which isn't a real animal, and shouldn't be treated as such.
