1948年夏、丸木夫妻は《原爆の図》を描くことを決意し、1950年には《原爆の図　第1部　幽霊》を完成させました。同年8月には、《第2部　火》、《第3部　水》 も加わり、初期三部作として発表。1950年末頃アメリカでの展示の打診を受けての再制作版ともに各地をめぐりました。
