Depends but I usually start by making a rough sketch using shapes to figure out the form with minor details kinda like what's shown below

I later redo said sketch with more details and cleaner linework until I reach the desired results

I really don't see whats so subjective about it

Not only did it misinterpret parts of the drawing, it completely eliminated all of the awesome gesture and linework. This is actual art mutilation. Please look closer at these.
