Basically I do as much colouring/effects as I feel is enough to get the general feel/look I want on a piece before lineart. So then I have roughly all the colours I need for the final piece. Then I just refine and do LOTS of adjustments.

Really? I always use front and profile references for whatever I’m drawing. The key is to keep everything consistent between the two views and realize that you might need to make some adjustments in 3D.
