Even a comparison in M88 between scanlines-on and no-scanlines-on does the trick. On an RBG monitor, PC-88 graphics would have blended somewhat, but not to the degree of filters used in some emulators. Note the dirt texture subtly changing between modes.

Dude, this illustration is NEAT, please pardon me, I was so frustrated I wanted to take a go at balancing it, I spent a few minute playing with gradients and layer modes and I think you can super easily fix it. Sometimes we are so much into a piece we can't see the path anymore
