Hard disagree. Modern Sonic is a lot more expressive, due to being more simplified, it's just that he's animated poorly in the games. Look at the IDW comics or the Tyson Hesse shorts though, and he's expressive as heck.

The Oliver draped over Rin's shoulder came first.

I later simplified Oliver's design for his official ref.

Then when the comic came around I simplified him more by removing back leg patches like I said earlier
