Really conveys the feeling they aren't fully there or have lost control of themselves since the eyes are the universal way to read if someone has it together. Hajime no Ippo does it too and I love it because you know the character took a hard hit.

I can't think of a universal trend in mine but more often than not in my designs I like to include something that partially/wholly obscures the neck.

I'd give all my characters turtlenecks given the time and opportunity tho.,,,
