Atropos, "whose name means 'the dreadful,' 'the merciless,' or 'the cutter,'" holds the shears, cuts the thread, determines the manner of one's death. (Judika Illes's The Element Encyclopedia of Witchcraft, 154-155) #FolkloreThursday (2/3)
Atropa belladonna, aka deadly nightshade, is a poisonous and deadly plant which grows among ruins and in wastelands. Its genus name comes from Atropos, the oldest of the three Fates. (Judika Illes's The Element Encyclopedia of Witchcraft, 154-155) #FolkloreThursday (1/3)
In #Scotland there is an ancient belief that if you plant a #rowan tree near your front door it will ward off witches’ spells as well as faeries & bad spirits. Rowan is also known as witchentree or witch-wood. #FolkloreThursday #BurnsNight #Celtic #Tree month, Img: Cicely Barker

Did you know, in 17th C, rural practitioners of folk magic used an ointment that would help them see the Faerie folk?
A blend of several flowers & sunflower oil and left in the sun for three days until thickened.
I think this little lady may have helped them!
One evening, a penniless shoemaker received unlikely aid from a few elves. The elves made a pair of beautiful shoes from leather scraps. The man sold the gorgeous shoes and then provided food and clothing to those with less than himself.

With #spring2020 right around the corner, it is almost time for one of my favorites to get to #work; the #Garden Gnome! A helpful member of the fae. Bringing protection & good luck. For when the sun goes down, they come alive at night to help work on your garden.#FolkloreThursday
Another epic session, #FolkloreThursday-ers!
This is @DeeDeeChainey signing off now, but we'll be back in just 30 mins with the epic @Mythcrafts!
(In the meantime, post your 'job vacancy adverts' for 'folkloric jobs' below! Here's the banshee, doing her night job...)
People who labor outside should avoid conversation with Lady Midday (or Polednice). Appearing from a cloud of dust at the hottest part of the day, she causes heatstroke and madness. Beware--if you can't answer her questions, she may cut off your head! #FolkloreThursday

#FolkloreThursday Most common profession for Leprechauns is shoemaker/cobbler. An invaluable job seeing as Trooping Fairies spend so much time dancing in fairy forts at balls & wearing their shoes out. The tapping of his hammer often betrays his position.

The Tailor of Gloucester by @beatrixpotter was based on a true incident.
A tailor was making a suit for the new mayor. He returned to his shop to find the suit finished save for one buttonhole. He encouraged the belief that it was fairy - or mouse - #work. #FolkloreThursday
"I'm a four loom weaver, as many a man knows,
I've nowt to eat an' I, ve worn out mi clothes
Mi clogs are both brocken, an' stockings I've none.
Thee'd hardly gi' us tuppence for all I've getten on."
from the old folk song "Four-loom Weaver"

Many think the dudge-whammet repairer of Winchett Dale has the most pointless occupation, as these green bellows-like creatures apparently serve no real purpose whatsoever. However, to those who really know, his 'job' is a tradition - and valued for that alone. #FolkloreThursday

#Bees symbolise wealth attained through hard work. They belong to Hera, the Mother Goddess of the #moon, & are therefore linked to the sign of Cancer, also known for its love of hard work. #Honey is the ambrosia of the Goddess, & symbolises richness & abundance. #FolkloreThursday
