There’s a very old literary strategy at play here called “delay of anticipation,” which just means forestalling an inevitable conflict in order to add tension to the forthcoming battle. You can see it used extensively in Grecco-Roman epics like The Iliad and The Aeneid. 2/12
‘Dido was I the cause of your dying? I swear by the stars,
by the gods above, I left your shores unwillingly, my queen.‘-Aeneas on seeing the shade of his one-time love in the Fields of Mourning. (Aeneid VI)#MythologyMonday

"I sing of warfare and a man at war.
From the sea-coast of Troy in early days
He came to Italy by destiny,
To our Lavinian western shore..."

Since Atalanta is kind of blank slate I based my fanfic version on Camilla from The Aeneid since they serve similar roles in this chapter. Camilla is a follower of Artemis/Diana but is basically an Amazon so it fits quiet well.

In Virgil’s Aeneid, Aeneas travels to the underworld where he finds himself surrounded by phantoms. To escape, he must pass through the Gate of Ivory – the gate of false dreams

I took another walk this morning and listened to books seven and eight of the Aeneid. Something I hadn’t noticed before is that Turnus has Io depicted on his shield. I found an article with an interesting interpretation - here is the first page.
"There was no King more just for his piety or greater for his warrior exploits, than Aeneas."
-Virgilio.Aeneid (I, 544)
"Piety, this is wisdom, and running away from evil, this is intelligence."
-Job, 28.28.

@DLanon Not pictured: Turnus x Camilla from the Aeneid because it's a very lonely ship and no one does art for it.
We're creating found poems based on #MadayaMom, the beautiful and haunting graphic novel from @Marvel @ABC and @dalibor410, learning about connections between Syrian #refugees and Virgil's Aeneid. More as the those poems are, well, found... #simplyamazingsd735

Detail of Iapyx removing an arrowhead from the thigh of Aeneas as recounted in Virgil’s Aeneid. Aeneas’ son Ascanius weeps at his side and I love the soldiers muttering in the background. #Troy
