In 2009 I wrote an article for the English Heritage Historical Review in which I stated by belief that the hidden meaning of the Red Velvet Room at Chiswick House was as an early representation of the Hiramic degree in Freemasonry. For this I received almost universal praise.

My theory- you can see here that at different times statues of Mercury & Venus occupied the same plinth south of Chiswick House. I believe the space was occupied first by Venus until she was relocated to the Doric column.Then Mercury took her place.
