My theory- you can see here that at different times statues of Mercury & Venus occupied the same plinth south of Chiswick House. I believe the space was occupied first by Venus until she was relocated to the Doric column.Then Mercury took her place.

The Tower House on the Bedford park estate in Chiswick painted by Manfred Trautschold in 1882. Manfred (1854 - 1921) was the son of the German portrait painter Wilhelm Trautschold. Manfred moved to the US with his family and died in New York.
